Fleeting Moments

Lesson learnt today:

When a pretty girl smiles at you, smile back.

And take a photo.

I need to grow some balls in shooting street photography.

Update: I'm currently back in France, after travelling from Germany to Luxembourg and some border towns of Belgium. Luxembourg & Belgium is much, much more beautiful than expected. I'll surely revisit these places in the future.

Ciao.

Ciao! Bonjour! As some of you may know, I'm currently in middle of a 3 weeks trip at Europe. How awesome is that!

As predicted, Europe is such a beautiful place, it's incredible. There are hints of immense culture & history in fine details of its buildings, and the people here are really friendly- especially the Germans! A little surprising, eh?

It's a pity that I do not have a routine of writing diary and I'm starting to forget things now. But fear not, I have tonnes of photos to remind me of them and narrate back to you! As it's my first time shooting primarily film when travelling, I didn't bring too many films- just 28 rolls of them. A lot? I've seen people who brought 150 rolls of films for a 2 weeks trip to Tibet!

Anyway, it's a bit late here. I must admit that the jet lag has never really recovered from me, as I always feel tired and exhausted at about 8pm everyday. But luckily it's winter, which means the sun sets early and rises late- so I can sleep a little bit longer and go to bed earlier.

I'm currently at Trier, Germany as I'm writing this blog post. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day- I'll travel to 3 different countries: Luxemburg, Belgium and France- all in one short winter day. Let's hope that the weather is good for photography!

Ciao.

Reorganising Myself

_________________________________

Bathing is such a wonderful thing.

Rarely could I find a moment to stop down, relax, and just think of anything I want to think of. But when bathing, I could reflect upon my life and contemplate about it, just like meditation.

I find this immensely useful.

Just now I was thinking of my current situation which is in common with most young people of today- we simply spend too much time in front of the computer. The extent is so serious that I really think its an addiction- like drug addiction- that we find it hard to pull out from. My friend even sent me a news report claiming that this dependence is actually more harmful towards our health than smoking and alcohol. I also noticed that I'm constantly glued in front of my laptop, which is a serious worry.

So while still meditating in the bath, I made a decision.

I'm reaching out, and getting my life back on track.

我要
把我生活   帶入正軌。

Cheers.

My Old Home

Finally, exams are over. I'm back shooting! How awesome is that.

I just shifted house recently, from a landed property to a condominium unit in the air. I'm always superior, literally, position wise..

Anyway, here are some film shots that I made around my old home. Just bits and pieces of memories, it now looks quite different after a small renovation. I always get real bored at home and wander around to keep my trigger-happy finger satisfied.

So now, I present to you: My Old Home.

My First Roll of Film

The first experience is always an exciting one.

1.
I'm a cheapskate. I shoot frame 00.

It was way back in 2009, but I still vividly remember the day when I bought my Nikon FA, I was so excited. As I'm the type of person that does a lot of research before buying something, I already know all the operations of the camera prior to receiving it. So, immediately I popped my 50mm f/1.8 on my new camera and tested the basic operations.

2.
Coconut trees. Pardon me for the lossy compression.

3.
Fuel prices were skyrocketing in 2009.

Then, it was time to load the film.

4.
天堂鳥,Bird of Paradise.
(Busy bokeh from 50mm f/1.8.)

What film would you choose for your first try in film photography?

Sensible people would choose an inexpensive colour negative film as their virgin roll, due to negative film's generously wide exposure latitude (or "forgiveness", if you prefer) and relatively cheap developing costs compared to slide films.

5.
Rich colours from Velvia.

But I'm not a sensible person.

6.

For my first ever roll of film, I used Fujifilm Velvia 50. Yes, you read that correctly. An expensive, slow, demanding and very unforgiving slide film for my first try in film photography in a 30 years old camera that I just bought from a stranger. I must be mad.

7.
Penang.

In fact, I didn't know that E-6 processing is SO expensive until I finished shooting the whole roll and went to develop it- it really cost me dearly. I seldom shoot slide film after that, partly due to the price & also the inconvenience- the only photolab that develops slide film is located at a very busy area in the city centre- and I'm sure that I'll get lost before even reaching there. However, when viewed under a light table, slide films give incredibly rich colours and tonality that no print film could ever match.

8.
Looks like a person who'd fallen over.

So here is it. My first ever roll of film.

9.
My personal favourite: Sunset at Bangsar.
